I began planning my optional Christmas homework in my head as I walked home from school. I wanted it out of the way. I decided quickly against the Poet Laureate. Partly because I’d forgotten how to spell Betjeman, and partly because I’d picked up a slight anti-Betjeman vibe from Mrs Greenwood when she’d described him as ‘probably German – but hiding it’. I’d do a ‘My Christmas’ and make it meaningful, teacher-pleasing and perfect–to make up for the newspaper (mentioned earlier) that had disgusted Mrs Greenwood.

After a few false starts – the literary Christmas ramblings of a Labrador and then the gift hopes of Lady Jane Grey – it came to me.
